How do I know what size my wheelie bin is?

Posted on
Cotswold Single Wheelie Bin Storage

Most people in the UK have no idea what size their wheelie bin is. What makes it more difficult is that they don’t come in specific sizes, a 240-litre wheelie bin isn’t just one set of measurements. In fact, wheelie bins can come in all different measurements. So how do you know what size wheelie bin you have?

Normally wheelie bins are measured by capacity, which can make it difficult to find a suitable wheelie bin store. All of our wheelie bin storage units are built to fit the vast majority of wheelie bins in that particular capacity. But we also list all of our internal dimensions on our product pages, making it easier to buy with confidence.

So what size is a UK wheelie bin?

The vast majority of the UK has either 180/240 litres. 95% of our orders for bin stores are for 180/240 litre sized wheelie bin storage units. But some councils are providing 140-litre wheelie bins as standard, mostly in central London. However, if you have a bigger household it is possible to have a 360- litre bin.

How do I know my size wheelie bin?

The best way to find out the size of your wheelie bin is to check the lid. Wheelie bins should be marked with the name of the manufacturer, weight recommendation, and capacity. From this, you should be able to find a wheelie bin store that is suitable.

What sizes do wheelie bins come in?

There are many different sizes of wheelie bins. The domestic sizes in the UK are 80 litres, 120 litres, 140 litres, 240 litres and 360 litres.

What size are recycling boxes

Fortunately, recycling boxes come in a standard size (mostly). The most regular measurements are: 350 mm x 570 mm x 390 mm (H x W x D).

Wheelie bin dimensions

If you are looking to keep your wheelie bins hidden it is important to know the size of your wheelie bin. If not you might not get something that holds your wheelie bin safely, so here is a helpful guide.

80-Litre Wheelie Bin = 930 mm x 450 mm x 510 mm (H x W x D) – Holds roughly 2 partially full bin bags

120-Litre Wheelie Bin = 930 mm x 480 mm x 550 mm (H x W x D) – Holds roughly 2 partially full bin bags

140-Litre Wheelie Bin = 1060 mm x 480 mm x 550 mm (H x W x D) – Holds roughly 2-3 full bin bags

240-Litre Wheelie Bin = 1070 mm x 580 mm x 740 mm (H x W x D) – Holds roughly 4 full bin bags

360-Litre Wheelie Bin = 1120 mm x 600 mm x 880 mm (H x W x D) – Holds roughly 6 full bin bags

However, please note that all measurements are averages and may be different to your wheelie bin.

Choosing The Right Storage Unit For Your Home

Along with wheelie bins, wheelie bin stores can come in many different shapes and sizes, with many different benefits. Our units can hold any size domestic wheelie bin from 120 litres to 360. We currently offer three different models; Cotswold, Burford, and Kensington, all of them are designed to last and are handmade from sustainably sourced Scandinavian redwood.

Our favourite is the Kensington, as it comes with a living roof! It adds a fantastic talking point to your garden while giving you more space for plants! It helps the environment by being made from environmentally friendly wood, using more sustainable delivery options, and adding an opportunity to offset your own CO2 with absorbing plants. If you have any questions please get in touch and our team will be more than happy to help! For even more helpful guides check out our blog.
